More room for pedestrians in Times Square

This headline in The New York Times grabbed my attention yesterday: "Mayor Plans to Close Parts of Broadway to Traffic." The NYT report goes on as follows: "The city plans to close several blocks of Broadway to vehicle traffic through Times Square and Herald Square, an experiment that would turn swaths of the Great White Way into pedestrian malls and continue Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's effort to reduce traffic congestion in Midtown." Wow, this should be interesting. Supposedly we might be seeing some changes as soon as May of this year. Stay tuned.

Lunar New Year Decorations

One other thing about this time of the year in Hong Kong (and other parts of Asia) is the decorating of buildings that goes on.  Think Christmas in the west, but with a twist.

It makes a walk downtown fun.

Unexpected Happiness in Paris

Its been bloody freezing and grey in Paris. A couple of days ago very early in the morning the clouds cleared and a rainbow emerged. Now that's the way to start the day.

Lunar New Year in Hong Kong

Last week was the start of the year of the Ox in Hong Kong. And with the start of the year there are celebrations and obligations. One obligation is to make offerings for the success of the year.

So I waited a few days for the crush to die down and headed out to a Taoist Temple in Wong Tai Sin. It was still busy. And the smoke from innumerable joss sticks filled the air.

Snow takes over London...

After all that talk on a previous post about the multicoloured city of London here comes the snow to prove us wrong...

 

But after all is well worth to be proven wrong just to see all covered in white...

 

The Latin Quarter, Paris

February has come in baring it's teeth with a biting wind that would keep most sensible photographers stay in front of the PC or Mac. But the show must go on and it did, and much to my surprise a very enjoyable day was had by all. After browsing around Shakespeare & Co well truth be told we shot some pix and headed for that masterpiece of gothic architecture Notre Dame. No matter how many times you see it it's always like the first, amazing! We will be back!!   Now into the Pantheon having braved the cold of Ile de Cité and Ile St Louis. One of the most memorable pieces of Neo-classical architecture you will find anywhere. Just look at the interior of that ceiling. It is the resting place of Voltaire, Rousseau, Zola, Dumas, Pierre & Marie Curie and many more. Next the Sorbonne and some happy group photos in front of this universal centre of learning. It is very rewarding to share my experience with like minded people who genuinely appreciate the romantic, tragic and intricate history of Paris and France. It is days like this that make it all worthwhile!
